Begging For Caliphate
(Iqbal’s Daryuza-e-Khilafat)
If the
governance goes out of hand, let it go,
Never be unfaithful to
command of God,
Dost
thou not have knowledge of history?*
Caliphate is not given in charity,
If we
don’t purchase that in lieue of our blood,
Such an
empire is a shame for Muslim,
I don’t
feel disgraced at damage to my skeletal structure,
But I
will definitely do, if I beg for remedial measure.
(Suggestions
invited for betterment)
*This couplet refers to the defeat that the Ottoman empire of Turkey
suffered at the hands of the British and laid down arms unconditionally
on November 03, 1918.
When the news reached India, Muslims were
struck with grief. They
showed their concern by holding meetings all over the country (India),
from Peshwar to Madras (now
Chennai) and from Karachi to Dacca.
They reminded the British government of the past foolish acts of the
Ottoman empire:
1- In
1799 Turkish empire instead of helping Tipu Sultan, helped the
British by advising the Sultan to
submit to the British,
2- In
1855 the Turks and the British had fought shoulder to shoulder in
the war of Crimia,
3- In
1857 the Turks permitted the British to take their troops through
Egypt to suppress the famous
Indian rebellion.
After these agitations, in December
1919 Khilafat conference was held in Amritsar.in which it was decided to send a
delegation to England in January 1920 to convince the British government to
restore Caliphate of the Ottoman empire. The delegation went to
England and spent eight months
and Rupees Sixtyfive thousand and returned empty handed.
